VITAL INFORMATION YOU NEED FOR HOW TO CUT HAIR

The first step in learning how to cut hair is to begin by dividing the hair into seven sections on the head. this is the way the professionals do it. Dividing the hair in this way allows you to cut it in a controlled, systematic manner.

You will be dividing the scalp into seven sections: top, right side, left side, right crown, left crown, right nape (lower back) and left nape (lower back). In addition, leave a one-half inch band of hair hanging loose around the perimeter of the hair line. The end result is hair that lies softly and beautifully, nicely shaped and very flattering to the face.

Plan to work from back to front and from the bottom up. This is specifically important when you are creating shorter, layered hairstyles. When creating longer hairstyles, you may need to re-divide the sections of the hair after cutting them in order to prevent the hair already cut from interfering with the uncut hair especially when you are cutting very curly hair. Each time you make a divided area of hair, comb the hairs straight, twist them together and pin or clip that section of hair so that it is out of the way of where ever you are cutting.

Start by making a clean parting line from the point just behind the ear on one side of the head to the matching point behind the ear on the opposite side of the head. Next, make parting lines on each side of the head just above the temples to separate the hair at the top of the head. Comb the hair smooth toward the center of the section at the top of the head and twist it up into a knot and clip it with a butterfly clip to secure it.

Now, create a parting line down the center of the back of the head. Separate the right and left crown sections by parting the hair in a line from behind the ears to the center part which you already made. These horizontal partings should meet to form a straight horizontal line across the back of the head. Comb each section to smooth the hairs. Twist and secure them as with the previous sections.

Now separate the remaining two left and right sections at the nape of the neck. Again, comb and straighten the hair.  Twist the hair and clip it out of your way.

After you have set aside all the sections, go back over the head, section by section, and let down a one-half inch strip along the outer edge of the hair – the perimeter, or hairline – and re-twist and secure the hair sections. Now you are ready to begin cutting.
